Korea Remembered, Then and Now
These haunting images by Lyle Novinski capture the face of a nation, its land and its people, and the life of the military at the end of the Korean Conflict. The photographs carry their own story apart from personal memories of time and place. In the long fifty year view the content emerges on its own, supported by the consciously composed images—a soldier’s view, but an artist’s camera. The exhibit opens on July 6 and runs all summer. M.I.A.
MIA is the story of eighteen year old Billy, who enlisted in the military in 1967. Through his letters, sent from Vietnam, we can only hope to achieve a better appreciation for those who made the supreme sacrifice for all of us. When we remember the fun times of the sixties (Flower-Power, the Beatles, Hippies, etc.) we must also remember that, War… was also a product of the sixties. M.I.A. is in memory of all those M.I.A. s and K.I.A.s of the Vietnam War and especially William Arthur Beyer, Panel 14E-Line 102 on the Vietnam Memorial Wall. Appropriate for all ages. Keep the Greatest Generation Alive
The U.S.S. Mississinewa was an Auxiliary Oiler whose role of the U.S.S. Mississinewa was to refuel ships in the South Pacific during WWII. On November 20, 1944, the U.S.S. Mississinewa was struck by a Kaiten (Imperial Japanese Navy manned suicide torpedo with a 3,418 lb. warhead), became totally engulfed in flames and subsequently sank with a loss of 63 U.S. Sailors and one Japanese Kaiten pilot. The tragedy and drama of the USS Mississinewa (AO-59) and her Japanese adversaries has been called the “last unsolved mystery of WWII.” Mike Mair, son of survivor Jack Mair, F2c will present a program on this historical event and his experiences researching his book “Oil, Fire, and Fate, The Sinking of the USS Mississinewa (AO-59) in WWII by Japan’s Secret Weapon.” The other purpose of the talk is to teach the audience how to talk to a vet, thank a vet and honor their legacy.
